Travel Baggage Insurance

Last Updated on April 30, 2019

Do you need baggage/luggage insurance? Maybe.

Also maybe you already have some:

— If you are a homeowner with homeowner’s insurance, your policy may already cover some losses abroad. Read the policy and/or ask your insurance agent.

— The collision insurance on your rental car may include some coverage for theft of or damage to items in the car.

— Airlines and other public transport companies usually have a certain (limited) liability for lost or damaged luggage.

Trip cancellation insurance often covers lost or damaged luggage.

— You may not care if all that old, used stuff disappears. Hurrah! You get to go out and buy all new stuff!

But if you’re carrying some expensive items—cameras, CD/DVD players, PDAs, laptop computers, binoculars, medicines, etc.—insurance may be worth the price, especially if you’re careless or forgetful of such items as cameras or expensive eyeglasses or jewelry(which, really, it’s better to leave at home.)

If you’re traveling on business, items such as business computers and other work-related devices are probably not covered by your homeowner’s insurance.

If, like most people, you’ve already got some coverage and you’re willing to self-insure the rest, then just remember to pick up all your stuff after passing through airport security (they end up with a treasure trove every evening).

But if you like the peace of mind that comes with knowing you’re covered, contact one of these insurance agencies:

United Kingdom & Europe: contact JS Insurance for coverage of trip cancellation, medicalmobile phone, computer, scuba diving and other travel insurance.

USA: contact InsureMyTrip.com for no-obligation price quotes on all sorts of policies.
