Caleche & Pasaport Building, Izmir, Turkey

Shades of Old Smyrna

Cloudless summer skies, warm salt-scented sea breezes stirring fronds on the palm trees, an easy clip-clop promenade along Izmir‘s waterfront boulevard, the Birinci Kordon (First Cordon) in a calèche….

Although Izmir is now an aggressively modern city, you sometimes see these relics of Old Smyrna: the driver of a horse-drawn carriage taking a quick siesta as he waits for the next customer, behind him the Pasaport building, Smyrna’s old customshouse.

A major port to the Aegean and Mediterranean for centuries, Izmir still has more Mediterranean ambience than any other Turkish city. When you travel to Turkey, give it a look!
