Great Theater of Miletus, Aegean Turkey

Seating for Thousands

The Great Theater is the most prominent remnant of the ancient city and seaport of Miletus (Milet), famed for Thales, a native son who laid thefoundations of mathematics.

The free-standing 15,000-seat theater is still in remarkably good condition, surrounded by farmers’ fields and, to the north, the broad flood plain of the Menderes Nehri—the Meander River—which (ahem!) meanders in loopy zigzags here and there across it before emptying into the blue Aegean.
