Sacred Pool at Hierapolis (Pamukkale), Western Turkey

Oooh! It’s Warm!

This was the sacred pool at the Roman health spa of Hierapolis, now called Pamukkale (pah-MOOK-kah-leh).

The warm calcium-laden waters spring from the earth just around the corner to the right and flow into the pool, then through channels and over a cliff. The water cools as it falls and calcium dissolved in it precipitates to form gleaming white travertines, the “Cotton Castle” (pamuk = cotton, kale = castle).
