Old New Constantinople

The southern end of İstiklal Caddesi at Tünel Meydanı(Tunnel Square) is where you board the Tünel, Beyoğlu’s little two-station underground train, for the ride downhill to Galata (Karaköy).

Note the tram tracks. A restored early 20th-century tramruns between Tünel Meydanı and Taksim Square.

If you don’t take the tram, you can walk downhill on Galipdede Caddesi, passing a whirling dervish hall, the Galata Tower, and the Ashkenazi Synagogue.
