A Moment’s Rest
In the midst of the volcanic wonderland of the Göreme Open-Air Museum, two visitors sit and rest beneath the shade of a tree.
They’ve probably spent a few hours admiring the eerily beautiful painted churches that have frescoes dating from a thousand or more years ago.
Although the Göreme Valley, with its dozens of painted churches, is now off limits to cave-dwellers, lots of other Cappadocian valleys are still alive with the chatter of matrons, the ring of men’s tools, the laughter of childrenand the braying of donkeys.
Some of the inhabitants still live in dwellings carved at least partially into the soft volcanic rock.
