Having cast off the black robes which symbolize earthly cares, the whirling dervishes are ready for the beginning of the sema, clad in the white full-skirted garments that symbolize their burial shrouds, and the red conical caps that are their tombstones, as they leave the world to ascend for communion with Allah.
