Istanbul Skyline from Beylerbeyi Palace, Turkey

Cloudy Day on the Bosphorus

What good is a cloudy day to a photographer?

Silhouettes!

The play of light and dark, shine and shadow, can make a photo just as color can.

During a long day’s research on the Asian shore of the Bosphorus, I found myself on the quai at Beylerbeyi Palace looking down toward Old Istanbul, the city’s silhouette underlined by the silver gleam on the dark water, and took one of my favorite photos of Istanbul.

The shadowy palace guard kiosk looming in the left foreground stands as a silent witness to the scene. (Look carefully and you’ll see a dark window looking right through the guard kiosk down to the city.)
