Three Graces

The museum in Side (SEE-deh), between Antalya and Alanya on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, is in the restored Roman baths near the 15,000-seat great theater. Artifacts from the extensive ruins of this large, very old city are exhibited here.

Few are as graceful as these three marble torsos all by themselves in a room where they catch the warm Mediterranean sun on a summer afternoon,…as–who knows?—their models might have done in real life two thousand years ago.

Antony met Cleopatra at the Temples of Apollo and Athena in Side for a romantic rendezvous right on the shore. Did they look upon these graceful sculpted shapes then, as we do now?
