Greenhouses, Greenhouses

The plants get the ground and the people live up in the air.

Looking at Demre (Myra, also called Kale) from above, it looks as though there’s not a single square meter of tillable earth left unplanted. Plastic greenhouses cover the crops of tomatoes, aubergines/eggplants and other vegetables, and fruit orchards provide patches of restful green amid the sea of light plastic.

A thriving Mediterranean agricultural town located between Kaş and Olimpos, Demre is just the sort of place you’d expect to find Santa Claus/Father Christmas, right?

In fact, this was indeed the town where St Nicholas did his charitable, priestly work in the 4th century. The St Nicholas Church in the town center commemorates him, and once held his bones.
