Kısmet Cave House, Göreme

Last Updated on August 11, 2022

Now here’s something completely different:

In a quiet residential neighborhood of Göreme Village, the Kısmet Cave House, backed-up against a fairy chimney, takes the familiar cave-hotel concept and adds a dash of color – brightly-decorated bedspreads, delightful floral designs on walls and furnishings painted by a Japanese artist and, in the breakfast room, life-size reproductions of famous Turkish paintings and frescoes from the Göreme Open Air Museum.

Mr Faruk Keleş’s hotel has just eight guest rooms which makes for a cozy atmosphere, especially at breakfast where everyone eats together at a long dining table.

That's what's special about the Kısmet: this warm, personal, among-friends atmosphere. While Faruk Bey would never intrude, he is always there for help, cheer, and friendly conversation.

Breakfasts consist of bread, home-made jams, honey, a choice of cheeses and cold meats, eggs how you want them, and seasonal fruits, all served on individual platters.

All eight rooms come with private bathrooms attractively decorated with travertine to blend with the cave backdrop. Those in the deluxe rooms have Jacuzzis, those in the standards have walk-in showers.

Bedroom fittings have been carefully chosen to mix and match the old and new. Wherever possible, old wood has been used to build modern cupboards and bedside tables. Each room is named after a flower which is painted onto the door, and crops up again inside the room. Most have stone fireplaces and central heating.

Finest of all the rooms is the Tulip Room which comes with drapes over the bed, a flat-screen TV, a Jacuzzi and a sitting area in front of a stone fireplace. Other rooms come without TVs although these can be provided on request.

Unusually for Göremeeach room has tea and coffee-making facilities with a small kettle, a boon for when you return from a hard day’s trekking in the valleys and fancy a quick drink before a shower. There are also lots of nooks and crannies where you can sit quietly over a book or just reflect on the extraordinary landscape.

Faruk Keleş (keh-LEHSH) was born and grew up in Göreme, and worked in tourism for many years.  A stay in his delightful boutique hotel promises to be memorable. It’s just a couple of minutes’ walk from the bus station and local restaurants.
