Last Updated on September 11, 2022

Mamure Kalesi (castle or fortress), 7 km (4.3 miles) southeast of Anamur along the coastal highway rests on 3rd-century Roman foundations.

With its southern walls touching the waters of the Mediterranean, and the rest of its fortifications protected by a moat, it was a formidable defensive point for the Romans, and later theByzantinesSeljuk Turks(1221) and Ottomans.

The three spacious courtyards of the castle are protected by 39 towers. Within the walls is a small mosquebuilt by the Seljuks, repaired in modern times, and still open to worshippers.
