Izmir's New Metro Line
Groundbreaking for a new metro line in İzmir occurred in February 2022. The M2 line will be officially called the Üçyol–Çamlıkule Hattı (Line) and is scheduled to be completed in 2026. It will have a total of 11 stations and span a distance of 13.3 KM from Üçyol to Buca. It will be Turkey’s third driverless metro line, the first of its kind in İzmir. The line will cost an estimated $765 million and is the 3rd major expansion of the İzmir Metro system.
Buca is a large residential district of İzmir (with approximately 500,000 residents) and is currently served by minibus and city buses. The densely populated area will be connected with the current metro network which will provide access to the İzban train system as well. An estimated 350,000 people will use the new metro line each day, helping to reduce pollution and congestion throughout the city.
