Bicycles on Bus & Train in Turkey

Last Updated on April 25, 2019

You can usually have your bike shipped as baggageaboard intercity busesships and ferryboats when the need for speed and/or comfort arises.

Taking Your Bike on the Bus

To take your bike on a bus, consult the individual bus company, preferably in advance, as policies of companies differ. You can usually put your bike in the baggage compartment under the bus if there is room (which is why you want to alert the company a day or two in advance if possible.) It’s best to remove the front wheel. (Some bus companies may require it.)

Say Yavas yavas! (yah-VAHSH yah-VAHSH, “Slowly, slowly!” ie, carefully) when the baggage handlers load your bike. In their enthusiasm to be accommodating, they may not realize that your bike is a fine machine capable of damage.

Taking Your Bike on the Train

From what I have been able to learn, the Turkish State Railways no longer accepts bicycles as passenger baggage.

It used to be that you could take your bike on certain trains as checked baggage if there was a baggage compartment on the train. Not all trains have baggage compartments. Often it is the slower trains that have them. Most express trains do not.

Taking Your Bike on the Ferryboat

On most ferryboats, it’s easy: just roll it on and roll it off. But as there are different kinds of ships and ferries, it’s good to ask in advance if possible.
