Jews have lived in eastern Thrace and Anatolia, which is now Turkey, for over 2000 years.

Below on this page I’ve listed the most interesting and accessible Jewish-interest sites.

I prepared these texts and photos in 1992 for the Quincentennial Foundation‘s celebration of the 500th anniversary of the arrival in the Ottoman Empire of Sephardic Jews fleeing the persecution of the Spanish Inquisition.

For security reasons access to synagogues is controlled. Individual visitors on their own walking tours will not be admitted.

For permission to enter, make arrangements in advancewith the Chief Rabbinate in Istanbul. You may be asked to provide a photo of your passport, and you may be expected to make donations to the places you visit. More…
