Driving in Turkey During Ramazan

Last Updated on May 2, 2019

Many people fast between the hours of sunrise andsunset during the Moslem holy month of Ramazan(Ramadan).

They eat no food, drink no water, teacoffee or any other beverage, and do not smoke.

This temporary lack of food and stimulants may have a deleterious effect on levels of alertness, particularly for persons driving trucks, buses, taxis and cars.

For dates of Ramazan, see my Turkish Almanac and Islamic Religious Holidays in the When to Go section.

Practice defensive driving, particularly during Ramazan.

The Ramazan Bayramı holiday following Ramadan brings a dramatic increase in intercity traffic and the highest accident rates of the year.
