Cappadocia Cave House, Urgup, Central Anatolia, Turkey

Troglodytes at Home

Without the metal stairway it’d be easy to believe I had stumbled upon the house of a Hobbit.

But no, this is just a normal Cappadocian cave dwelling in the town of Ürgüp not far from the famous Göreme Open-Air Museum.

If you look closely, you’ll see that it has electricity, phone, and even TV—not bad for a 2000-year-old lifestyle choice.

Should you feel the urge to “go troglodyte” (ie, become a cave-dweller), Ürgüp and some other Cappadocian towns (such as Göreme) have inns and hotels where you can stay in cave-rooms.
