Crenellation for All

Crenellation is how military architects top castle walls with alternate open spaces and blocks of stone so archers can shoot at attackers but still be protected.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more crenellated castle than Mamure Castle(MAH-moo-reh) at Anamur (Anamurium), built by the crusaders on Roman foundations southeast of Alanya on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast—and, as a travel writer, I’ve seen an awful lot of castles.

Anamur has a decent beach, some suitable hotels and pensions, and a Byzantine ghost town: now partially ruined, it’s been sitting there without inhabitants for nearly 1400 years.

Not a bad place to spend an hour or so..especially if you like crenellation.
