Antique Theater, Bodrum, Turkey

Last Updated on April 29, 2019

The ancient Greco-Roman theater in Bodrum (Antik Tiyatro in Turkish) is set well above the town, typical of ancient theaters: if the play was boring, at least the spectators had a beautiful view to distract them.

Excavations were carried out in the 1960s, and restoration begun in the 1970s and 1980s, but halted for lack of funds. In 2005, with corporate support, they began again, and were successfully completed.

If you drive along Kıbrıs Şehitler Caddesi (also called the Bodrum-Turgutreis Yolu), the major roadinland behind the town center, you will see the theater at the top of a hill on the north side.

The walk uphill from the Bodrum Marina and Neyzen Tevfik Caddesi to the theater along Davulcu Ali Sokak (start by the Marina Vista Hotel) takes 12 to 15 minutes; the walk down, less.

Sunset is a particularly good time to be here….
