Abigail Goosen

is a student at Biola University pursuing a BA in Journalism and Integrated Media, with a concentration in Visual Media. She is also pursuing minors in Biblical Studies and Middle Eastern Studies. Having lived and studied in varying cultural contexts, she has a deep passion for people, language, food and cross-cultural understanding. She plans to use her language and journalism skills to highlight the beauty of varying cultures, historical sites, and people groups. Abigail spent much of her childhood in Adana and Izmir, which rooted in her a deep appreciation and love for Turkey.

 

Abigail is proficient in Turkish and Modern Standard Arabic. She is also proficient in Morocco’s local dialect: Darija. She studied Arabic in Rabat, Morocco for 7 months, and tested out as an advanced low speaker in Modern Standard Arabic.

Abigail has volunteered in ESL classrooms in Sale, Morocco, Denver, Colorado, and Los Angeles, California. In Los Angeles, Abigail led a team of weekly volunteers who worked with CORE Cal, a homeschool co-op which provides education for immigrants in Little Arabia. In conjunction with this volunteer opportunity, Abigail co-lead an fundraiser and art show, raising money for refugees while showcasing artwork of Afghan refugee children. In addition, Abigail has written and published an article in Gradient Magazine, documenting the transition of an Afghan refugee family. 

 

During her time interning with Turkey Travel Planner, Abigail sipped many çay glasses with local business owners, as she came to a deeper understanding of Turkish culture and society. In her writing and photography, Abigail aims to accurately depict the diversity and artistry found in Turkey’s enduring, radiant streets.
