Belkis Beach, Ölüdeniz, Fethiye, Turkey

Coarse Sand & Pebbles

Turkey has all sorts of beaches. Its most famous Mediterranean beach is of small pebbles and coarse sand but, as you can see, that’s of little concern to the families, couples and singles who flock to it every day from Maythrough October (and in many years April and November).

Paragliders soar above, talking advantage of some of the best updrafts found anywhere in the world. Only 8.5 km (5.3 miles) south of Fethiyeon Turkey’s Mediterranean coastBelcekiz Beach at Ölüdeniz doesn’t disappoint on any count.

You can stay in one of the dozens of hotels just inland from the beach, at one of the many less expensive hotels in the nearby towns of Ovacik and Hisarönü, or at even less expensive lodgings in Fethiye. Frequent dolmush service unites all these places in the warm months.

A road carved into the steep mountain slope at the back of the photo goes to KıdrakFaralyaButterfly Valley, and the Lycian Way, a 500-km hiking path from Fethiye to Antalya.
